Struggling with fatigue :(

Ran 4 1/2 miles today at a 10:29 pace. Felt very tired. I've been really struggling with fatigue the past 5 days or so (hence the lack of posting). I really just want to pass out and sleep for a week. I'm getting enough sleep, I'm pretty sure I'm eating enough. I don't know what's wrong with me.... hopefully it fixes itself soon I need my energy back!

Highlights:
*Ran 19 miles last week for the first time ever!
*Plan to run 20 miles this week for the first time ever!
*Ran 8 miles w/my parents on Saturday and will run 8 with my step-dad on Thursday and pretty excited. I love how running brings me closer to people.
*Shins still hurt but I can see it getting better.
*I can see myself getting stronger with weight training!
*I can see myself getting more flexible... I can touch my toes now without bending my knees!

So life is good, running is good. I will be catching up on all your blogs as soon as I turn in this GIANT research paper I've been working on the past week :(.

  3. Hmm...beginning of post: "I'm tired", end of post: "big research paper". Those two might be connected. Maybe you should cut back on your mileage a little just for now, until you're better rested. Hope you feel better hun.

  4. Whoa, you're ramping up your mileage already? Is this training for Chicago, cuz you're way early. But congrats on banging out a 19 miler. That's so awesome but it could be the reason why you are fatigued. Your body is still recovering from the pounding. Run short, slow distances for the next week or two, then ramp up the mileage again. Hope you feel better :)

It's not exactly "for" chicago yet, I'm in "pre-training". I want my base to be around 20 miles a week though. And I start training officially on April 19th which is still way earlier than most other people, but I'm going for a longer, slower-building program since I'm a newbie. The program is 27 weeks I think?? But it only build long runs by 2 miles at MOST, goes up to the full 26 miles (run/walk) and has a TON of cutback weeks in it. I don't think my body could take the typical 4 month marathon training programs, they build WAY too fast!

If you're curious, this is my "plan" http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=thtU_ip-K6MyGzLyA2EA0ng&gid=1

Official "week 1" starts on April 19th :D

  6. I think you just hit off weeks. It's more the mental part of being a runner. I just say let your body slow down if you want too. It's like weight loss, you'll have good weeks and bad weeks. As long as you're still pushing forward I think that's what counts. You can feel great all the time or it'd be easy and everyone would do it!

  7. If you follow that spreadsheet you'll kick some ass. Oh and that's pretty awesome that you're getting in such long runs. I think in training I've only run a few 18-milers...which is probably why I always feel awful when I finish a marathon.

  8. Hmmm. The only thing I have heard is that if you feel tired you may be pushing yourself too hard. Listen to your body. Hope things get better.

BTW. I'm a newbie running blogger. I've been following you for a while and it sounds like we are kinda in the same area of training. Although I'm going for a Half, not a Full. Keep running! I love the title of your blog too. ;)

  9. Honestly, sometimes I get really sleepy when I start "training" again. Also if my schedule changes drastically (i.e. first week of a new semester, recovery from jet lag, starting a new job) I tend to need a ton of sleep. This used to sort of alarm me, but now I've accepted it's how I operate.

I think everyone's right about listening to your body, BUT I don't think it's unheard of to be extra tired as your body adjusts to more running. It happens to me. And has never really correlated to an injury.
